Ronald Reagan once said that a nation without borders is not a nation. We are also a nation of laws and have rules that must be followed. What is happening in our society and has been happening for the last several decades with illegal immigrants is not only a shame but a crime.
We currently have over 20 million illegal immigrants in our country.
This has caused a tremendous burden on every aspect of our society and is to a degree partially responsible for our current economic malaise. Our school system has been overburdened with not only the number of students but also the challenge to teach additional languages which has caused a reduction in the education of the rest of the students.
It’s been estimated that over 25% of the costs of medicine in our country are related to illegal immigrants. And while there have been thousands of illegal immigrants who have done jobs that many Americans felt demeaning, it has in fact taken away those jobs from legal residents.
The number of crimes committed by illegal aliens is far higher by percentage than those of real Americans. Over half of the increase in state prison population since 1995 is due to illegal immigrants and this results in a cost of $25,000 per inmate per year or a total of $6.7 billion just for illegal immigrants in our prisons! A large number of gang members are composed of illegal immigrants.
Who is to blame for this situation? The reality is all of us.
Republicans (and many Americans of all sides) wanted cheap labor and more people to buy homes and cause housing prices to rise. Democrats wanted more votes to keep them in office and to try to appear like they were the caring party. Neither party had the political chutzpah to do what was right with illegal immigrants. It was politically toxic for all these years but now the tide has changed.
But you and I are also part of this problem and there is something that we can do. It has been proposed that we just give everyone amnesty for all those who currently reside here. This is a grave mistake. The minute that happens a tsunami of immigrants will flood this country knowing what just happened. If you thought problems were bad economically now, just wait to see what happens after amnesty is announced.
It’s been said that it would not be feasible to round up 20 million illegal immigrants and deport them. I agree. It would be a difficult issue but still something must be done.
On May 11, 2009 on the radio a person from Carson City now labeled “José the American” gave an impassioned plea to the citizens of this country. José is a descendent of the Basque and lived in Venezuela, Nicaragua and Mexico. He went through the process and became a legal immigrant and wrote a letter to the King of Spain saying that he was now an American. He said that if America was ever at war with Spain he would fight on America’s side because that is his country now. For three uninterrupted minutes José gave one of the most profound things I’ve ever heard on the radio.
Here is a link to replay this 5 minute section:
He said in his heavy Mexican accent that (paraphrasing), “America is one of most charitable countries in the history of the world. Whenever there is an earthquake or tsunami the Americans are there first. He said Americans, you don’t know what you have. You are taking it for granted and that is why people come here. But they must come here legally. If they do not follow a legal system the country will not remain as is. It will become as other countries and lose its ability to become charitable.”
Our founding fathers had designed a system of government that was based upon the successful system of the Anglo Saxons. It required that the federal government has limited powers and those powers were clearly defined. One of those powers was to protect its border but the federal government has not done adequately its job. The federal government has become involved in many many things that it was not designed or intended to become involved in. These things were to be left to the states.
For an example, education was one of the highest priorities of our founding fathers but they knew that it was important there not be a federal Department of Education. It was to be run by the states. Instead because of political expediency this principle has been ignored and the federal Department of Education is one of the most bloated bureaucracies in our government. Here is just one example of the government taking over something that was not supposed to do and in the process ignoring the things that it should do.
The people of Arizona have suffered tremendously because of the number of illegal immigrants that live in that state. Over 9% of the population of Arizona are illegal immigrants and this burden has become unbearable. My brother works as a neurosurgeon in one of the hospitals in Phoenix. He told me once that I would not believe how much money it costs the hospital on a daily basis to take care of these people. What the governor of Arizona did was bring to the forefront the need of the federal government to do its job and enforce its constitutional requirements and duties.
America needs to wake up. We are charitable people but we are being taken advantage of and it is costing us dearly. If this is not stopped we will see the end of our country.
I propose the following scenario as a partial way to deal with these illegal immigrants. These thoughts are my own and I have not researched nor heard of these suggestions.
Number One-Any illegal immigrant who has committed any crime or felony are to be instantly deported with severe penalties for returning illegally. Why do other countries have far stiffer penalties for being an illegal than America?
Number Two-I propose we offer an incentive for those illegal immigrants who desire to stay here by following the correct system. They will need to leave this country and return home to their own but we will give them $1000 per person, proper identification and all the necessary paperwork to be able to return to this country in the proper manner. It may take them a year or so to do this, but the reward will be they will become legal citizens.
Number Three-if they do not desire to follow the system they will not be allowed to have the privileges of legal Americans.
Number Four-We as a people must not support any business, organization, party or individual who does not support our system of laws and hires or uses illegal immigrants in their workforce or business. We have no problem with legal immigrants of any nation, race or ethnicity but should not stand for any illegal immigration from any nation, race or ethnicity.
Yes I know things are bad in other countries, I am fully aware of some of the terrible conditions they come from. But unless we enforce the rules and laws of our country we will become like them. And then how will we be able to help them? What is the point of being a nation of laws if we do not follow the law?

You may be thinking that this is strange subject for a motivational speaker to be talking about-illegal immigration. The fact of the matter is I really don’t know what you think but I want to address this issue. I believe that our country was founded by God. I believe that America has a manifest destiny to be an example to the world and that the Constitution is to be the constitution of every country. I believe in a profoundly spiritual basis for this country yet I see people and politicians who don’t recognize this foundation.
I love America. I can honestly say that I’m not like those who Jose claims doesn’t recognize what we have. I do recognize what we have but I also recognize that we are losing it. We have tremendous blessings whenever we follow the commandments of God. God is the source of all our blessings, not government. It is important that you and I as a people draw close to God and try to be the best we can. This life is a test and eternal rewards are based upon how we live this life.
The only real way to save all those poor people throughout the world is through our constitutional foundation. When a country is founded upon freedom and righteous people follow those laws, God will bless them. America is supposed to be the example not the crutch for all those people. My heart bleeds when I see the poor in other countries but we cannot be the policeman nor the provider of all the world. They must do it themselves. They must see what we have done and want to emulate that in their own country.
The dictators and despots of the world must be removed by their own people. Yes it will take bloodshed and we will be there to support them but we cannot do it for them.
As mentioned earlier I believe that America is supposed to be the example to the world. Unfortunately for the last few decades we have not been a good example. Our laws have become corrupted. Our morals have decayed tremendously. For some reason many people in this country have done everything possible to remove every aspect of God in every way they can. But we must return to Him and be a righteous nation following its constitutional basis.
There’s hardly anything more inspiring than that!
